                Regional Conservation Laboratory, Mysore

India is a vast country and it is not possible for one centre at Lucknow to cater to the conservation needs of the whole country. The regional centre for the southern region is functioning at Mysore. The RCL provides technical assistance in conservation of different art objects in southern states of the country.

Activities

The RCL provides conservation services and implements programs of the NRLC in the region.

PG Diploma in Conservation and Heritage Management :

Karnataka University, Dharwad in collabortion with Regional Conservatin Laboratory (unit of National Research Laboratory for Conservation of Cultural Property(NRLC), Ministry of Culture, Government of India, Lucknow), Siddharathnagar, Mysore will start a new Post Graduate Diploma in conservation and heritage management from this academic year. It is an out come of a MoU signed on 29th July, 2009 by Karnataka University, Dharwad  and RCL (unit of NRLC), Mysore. This course will be managed by the three Depts namely Kannada Research Institute, Dept of Master of Tourism, K.U. Dharwad and RCL, Mysore.

Many trained, skilled professionals are needed in the country to manage and conserve its vast and diverse cultural, artistic and architechtural heritage.  This diploma course will help the Indian youths to acquire professional skills required for the jobs in  this newly emerging field of heritage conservation and management.  The passed out students can do private conservation practice , secure jobs in museums, archives, libraries, conservation laboratories  ,get immediate placement as the interns in the field projects run by NRLC, Lucknow and its unit at Mysore

The entry point is graduation;B.Sc.with Chemistry as a major subject or Bachlor in Fine Arts ( BFA)  or BA in Ancient Indian History and Epigraphy or History and Archaeology or any other equivalent degree provided they studied Archaeology or History Arts as one of the of it subjects at the degree level with at least 50% marks will be eligible to apply for the course.  Total number of searts are 16 out of which 6 are for inservice candidates and remaining are for the freshers.  The course will be conducted in two parts at two places i.e., Kannada Research Institute, Karnataka University, Dharwad and Regional Conservation Laboratory (unit of NRLC), Siddharathanagar, Mysore.  

The course is already notified  by the Karnataka University, Dharwad vide their notification number KU/Aca/P.G/Adm/2009-10/54 dated 08.07.2009 which has appeared in Deccan Herald and can also be seen at their website www.kud.ernet.in. Interested may apply downloding the application from the website.  Duly filled application must reach to Director, Kannada Research Institute, Karnataka University, Pawatenagar, Dharwad within due date ..

Projects
  1. Orientation Workshop of 10 -day duration on Preventive Conservation of Museum Objects at the Regional Conservation Laboratory, Mysore in the month of Jan, 2007.
  2. Regional Conservation Laboratory, Mysore designated as a research center of the National Manuscripts Mission. The research projects in the area of Alternative to silicone acetate lamination use of oxygen-free environment, adhesives for palm-leaf manuscripts and traditional methods and materials of conservation.
  3. Workshop on preventive conservation of temple art works from 29-30 Nov.2007 in collaboration with Mysore district administration.
  4. Conservation work at Sri Malai Mahadeshwara Temple.
  5. Conservation of oil paintings of Mysore Palace.
  6. One-day seminar on ‘Disaster Management' in collaboration with Mysore Palace Board and Dept. of Archaeology,Mysore. on18th August,2007.

  9. Conservation of rare books from Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore.

  11. Organisation of National Conservation Conference in association with Indian Association for the Study of Conservation of Cultural Property.
  12. Conservation of wooden objects of Janpada Loka, Ram Nagar, Bangalore. 13. Conservation of paintings at Meenakshi Temple, Madurai.
